The Grand Hotel Experience Lives On...
The Balsams Grand Resort - The Mount Washington Hotel - The Mohonk Mountain House
The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa

Despite the demise of most of the grand resort hotels in New England, a few still exist,
offering the modern vacationer a chance to relive the experience:

The Balsams, Dixville Notch, NH
ca. 1890-1901

Nestled among the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the picturesque Dixville Notch on the shores of Lake Gloriette, the Balsams offers guests a taste of the grand hotel tradition. The original house was built in 1873, and was extensively enlarged and remodeled over the years. Restored to its former glory, the Balsams complements its beautiful surroundings with numerous activities and exquisite dining. Fine ski slopes are nearby in winter, and a superb Donald Ross golf course in summer.

The Mount Washington Hotel is the only remaining grand Victorian resort hotel in the Mt. Washington valley. Built in 1902, an era when a month long stay was commonplace among many such vacation resorts. The Mount Washington Hotel has endured the Depression, the demise of rail and coach, and invention of the short stay automobile traveler. It's grandiosity and elegance is dwarfed only by the magnificent surroundings of Crawford Notch and New England's highest peak, Mt. Washington.

Rising from the rocky shore of Lake Mohonk in New York's Catskills Mountains, the Mohonk Mountain House is a National Historic Landmark and one of the greatest treasures of the Hudson Valley. "Founded in the 1870s by Quaker Albert K. Smiley and his twin Alfred H., it is still the mountain retreat they envisioned, run by more than 15 members of the Smiley family, all of whom carry on the tradition of reverence for nature espoused by their great grandfathers." Surrounding the hotel are numerous walking and hiking paths punctuated regularly with rustic bridges, railings, and gazebos perched precariously on the protruding rocks where visitors can relax and take in the glorious scenery.

What began in 1865 as a modest country inn with spectacular views of the Presidential Mountain Range grew over the years into one of the grand hotels of White Mountains region.  The size and reputation of the Mountain View House expanded under the direction of the Dodge family, reaching a final capacity of over 300 guests by 1928.  When the hotel was sold by the Dodges in 1979, it had the distinction of being the oldest resort to be owned and operated continuously by the same family living on the same property.  The hotel finally closed its doors in 1986.  Things looked bleak for the hotel, emptied of its contents and left vacant, until 1996, when it was purchased and given a $2 million restoration.  Recristened the "Mountain View Grand", the hotel opened its doors once again to guests in May 2002.
